"Plate tectonics is an all-embracing concept that has revolutionized the Earth sciences in the 20th century"1. This concept explains that the lithosphere, the outermost shell of our world, is divided into a number of rigid plates floating on a rugged layer of the upper mantle. The upper mantle envelopes the mantle, in which the convection currents take place which envelopes the mantle. New oceans are formed as a result of a new crust been formed as two plates move apart; and the collision and destruction of opposing plates explains the formation of the world's mountain belts.
